I guess it could work if there were character switching depending on which obstacles were in the characters' paths, but the constant switching back and forth would likely wreck the flow of the gameplay.
I can't see Sonic Team or another Sega dev making a Mario game because that series is quitessentially "Nintendo" right down to the design philosophy behind it. Sonic was always an arcade game wrapped in a console platformer, with very much a Sega arcade game design philosophy behind it. Right off the top of my head, both Mario and Sonic would find it impossible to get past the first area of Bonk's Revenge (Bonk can swim up waterfalls, a skill neither Sonic nor Mario have).Īnother thing would be: who develops the game? As much as Nintendo fanboys clamor for EAD or another Nintendo dev to take over Sonic design, I just can't see that working. It calls into all his skill sets, same as Sonic with Sonic stages, and Mario with Mario stages. Bonk level design is to be traversed as Bonk only can. I don't see why if I was playing as Sonic and you played as Mario and we were in a Bonk type environment / prehistoric place why it couldn't work. Hell make King Koopa and Dr R a playable team too ha with a dark ending. Like a 2 player team 1 could be Mario and Sonic, but a single player version if you chose Sonic would be having Mario the end boss or something and vice versa ? Have teams like Mario and Sonic, Tails and Luigi, Princess and Knuckles, Yoshi and Shadow would be crazy but a 1 player and 2 player alternative team mode would be cool. But yes just a Mario and Sonic game would be gold financially, hopefully play wise as well. I'm surprised there has never been a great hack with Sonic, Mario and Bonk all together after 20 years at least. Or give a nod to NEC Hudson Bonk by putting Mario and Sonic in a prehistoric zone. Maybe create a world that incorporates pipes from Mario and loops from Sonic, make a typical castle level both games had. Well if Mario and Sonic are the team, Sonic could grab Mario to go superfast during certain parts, Mario can grab Sonic to fly while shooting fireballs if flying enemies are near, Tails could fly Luigi and stuff.
